The benefi ts of the Green Economy and the need for more sustainable ways of operating have been
very topical in South Africa. South Africa is a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change and has successfully hosted the 17th Conference of Parties (COP 17) event which took place in December 2011. The COP 17 conference resulted in a second commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol. This has largely been seen as the only internationally recognised binding mechanism to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. In December 2009, South Africa conditionally agreed to effect a greenhouse gas emission reduction target of 34% by 2020, and 42% by 2025.
