The Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Ms Thandi Modise, will host the NCOP Review and Planning Session on 07 February 2017, in Cape Town, on the theme “Celebrating 20 Years of Democracy.”

Derived from the drafters of the Constitution, the NCOP plays a pivotal and unique role and is strategically placed to ensure the three spheres of government co-operate with each other.

Articulated in Chapter 3 of the Constitution, the role of the NCOP should be understood as that of implementing the principle of co-operative government which states that national, provincial and local spheres of government which are distinctive, interdependent and inter-related, perform their functions in a spirit of consultation and co-ordination.

As such, the NCOP will be holding the Review and Planning Session with all stakeholders to:

a. Review the work done since the begin of term;
b. Enhance the relationship between NCOP, SALGA and the Provincial Legislatures;
c. Ensure the synchronisation and effective implementation of common programmes;
d. Ensure effective and efficient processing of legislation affecting provinces; and
e. Determine the way forward is strengthen.

Among the participants expected for the session are:

a. Presiding Officers of the NCOP;
b. NCOP Permanent Delegates;
c. Provincial Speakers, Deputy Speakers, Chief Whips and Chair of Chairs; and
d. SALGA representatives.

We invite media to attend:
Date:                Tuesday, 7 February 2017
Time:               14:00
Venue:             Room E249, New Wing, Parliament

For further information, contact Ms Tsepiso Shuenyane, Spokesperson to the Chairperson of the NCOP, on 0761987897.
