US officials said earlier that Aziz, 67, the urbane face and international voice of Iraq under Saddam Hussein, was in US military custody in Baghdad.
Aziz, who figures in 43rd position on a list of 55 most wanted Iraqi officials, was one of the best known figures in the Iraqi regime even though he was not considered a member of Saddam's innermost circle - Sapa-AFP
