In this contribution, the Africa Institute of South Africa analyses some of the causes and consequences of the pro-democracy protests that have taken place in Swaziland in March and April 2011. Two related complaints were raised, namely, the fiscal irresponsibility of government and the unacceptably high poverty levels in Swaziland, especially in the light of the wealth and opulence of its absolute monarch, King Mswati III. After government forces violently suppressed the protests, the calls for democracy in Swaziland did not end, and President Jacob Zuma has now been called upon to intervene in this desperate situation. Certain conclusions are drawn, and recommendations made to encourage South Africa to act in accordance with the vision as laid down for its international relations, to create a better Africa and a better world.
