Eastern Cape Premier Makhekensi Stofile has welcomed the dispatch of a multi-sector management team to the province to probe public service delivery.

In a statement yesterday, Premier Stofile said the move would contribute towards ridding the province of corruption.

‘The move compliments another significant initiative I am taking to combat corruption. Investigations made by my office have revealed that current disciplinary procedures are too slow, too cumbersome and retard effective service delivery,’ said the premier.

He has requested chairperson of the ministerial advisory committee on local government transformation Peter Leon to carry out an urgent investigation into the feasibility of establishing a dedicated anti-corruption tribunal in the province, having due regard to existing labour law and national and provincial legislative competence.

This follows last week’s announcement by President Thabo Mbeki that a multi-sectoral management team would be sent to rid the province of corruption and service deficiencies.

President Mbeki said that the national government had for some time been concerned about the quality of the administration in the Eastern Cape resulting in serious deficiencies in service delivery.

He explained that the team would work with the provincial government and administration to address areas such as health, education, social development, finance and the eradication of corrupt practices within the public sector.

‘Both the national and provincial governments are determined to do everything possible to ensure that the people of the Eastern Cape receive the services to which they are entitled,’ said President Mbeki.

The premier has received a detailed report from Mr Leon, which his government is currently studying and which has been forwarded to the President and the national Cabinet.

‘Although it would be premature to reveal the contents of the report at this stage, I can confirm that it recommends a number of changes to existing procedures which, if implemented, will have the effect of expediting service delivery in the Eastern Cape and, indeed, in all the provinces.’ -BuaNews
