I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of South Africa for the sympathy and empathy expressed through your countless telephone calls, e-mails and letters to our Embassy regarding the horrific damage caused by the earthquakes and tsunami which hit Japan on March 11th.
I thank you for your words of kindness and support, and above all for the hands of friendship with which you are reaching out to us, the people of Japan, in this difficult time.
On March 16th, the Rescue South Africa Disaster Response Team left for Japan on a chartered flight. Their work in difficult conditions will become a symbol of friendship and solidarity between the people of South African and Japan.
The Embassy of Japan has opened a Condolence Book in a memory of the thousands of victims of the earthquakes and tsunami, which inflicted horrendous damage on north-eastern Japan. The book will be available as follows.
