The first step in creating a better future for all the people of Africa, is the establishment and maintenance of peace in all the countries of our continent. Although we have made important progress in ending some of the most serious conflicts, a great deal of work must still be done. I would accordingly like to express my support for the efforts of the Commission of the African Union in working for the resolution of continuing conflicts and in advocating the ratification and implementation of various AU instruments and commitments, including the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. Implementation of the Charter is of particular importance since peace will best be promoted and maintained by governments that adhere strictly to its provisions. I should also like to commend the Commission for all its other activities in support of peace.
