Reports that Mr De Klerk is considering the possibility of mediating in the Basque dispute are incorrect.
In February this year he and other Nobel Peace Laureates signed a statement welcoming the undertaking of the Abertzale Left pro-indendence party to abandon violence and to use exclusively peaceful and democratic methods to pursue its political goals. The hope was that the Abertzale Left would be able to persuade ETA to abandon violence as well.
On 5 September ETA announced that it had taken a decision some months ago not to carry out armed actions and, on 18 September, called for engagement with the signatories of the February statement "to explore the steps that they (ETA) and the Spanish Government need to take to end the last remaining violent conflict in Europe."
Mr De Klerk has received no formal request to mediate in this matter and would not consider doing so without the express approval of the Spanish Government and all the other relevant parties.
