The Super 14 rugby match this weekend, which sees the pride of
Pretoria crossing South African rugby¹s Rubicon to face off against
New Zealand opposition, in Soweto, is the most important
development in the sport since the Springboks won the World Cup in
1995.
The decision by the powers that be at the Bulls, when their home
ground became unavailable, to shift the match to Soweto rather than
another more traditional rugby venue, should be applauded by all
South Africans.
Not too long ago, Pretorians may have chocked on their
moustaches at the thought of skopping pale toe (kicking for the
posts) at Orlando Stadium, Soweto. And the arrival of these giant
Bulls from the north would have sent Sowetans ducking for cover.
But this weekend Soweto will host the biggest rugby match ever
held in a South African township. Many fans will be visiting a
township for the first time, and many township residents will
experience South African rugby culture, for the first time, at
close quarters.
It is one of those special South African moments that proves we
are better off for having one another, and that despite the
challenges we face, our society is on the right track.
I am a Stormers fan, with a home in Orlando and a soft spot for
the Cheetahs, but this weekend I am a Bulls supporter. Next weekend
(when the Stormers will visit Soweto for the Super 14 final ) is
another story.
