The interim national defence force commission has handed its final report to Defence and Military Veterans Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, she announced on Tuesday.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Sisulu said that she had received the report on Tuesday morning.

It would now undergo the normal process of being submitted to Cabinet, after which it would be given to Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu.

Parliament would then have an opportunity to read the recommendations emanating from the report, she said.

The interim commission was appointed on September 9, 2009, to advise on establishing a permanent National Defence Force Service Commission and a special dispensation for the conditions of service of members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

Its brief was to advise and make recommendations on a "unique service dispensation outside the ambit of the public service", Sisulu said.

It would further advise on the regulatory framework for this, and to investigate and provide advice on the remuneration and conditions of service of the SANDF.

The interim commission was asked to deal with these matters both in the short-term and the long-term.

Sisulu thanked the interim commission for the sterling work they had done, and their dedication and commitment.

The interim commission was chaired by Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Lebotsang Ronnie Bosielo, and included United Democratic Movement leader and retired general Bantu Holomisa, and Pieter Groenewald of the Freedom Front Plus, a veteran member of the Assembly's defence committee.

"Appointing members from such diverse backgrounds allowed us, for the first time, in this dispensation to have a bird's eye view of the SANDF since 1994," Sisulu said.
