1. Introduction

Today marks the beginning of an exciting time for my department, the youth, and specifically, the construction industry. This day signals the beginning of a series of events and programmes that will not only promote the construction industry but will also see the development of the skills base in the construction industry.

It makes me extremely proud to stand here looking at the future built environment professionals, contractors, artisans and other role players in the construction industry. For any country to prosper it has to make significant investment in its youth. As South Africa, we have seen how the youth made tremendous sacrifices to ensure that this country is transformed to a democratic rule. If as South Africans we are serious about real transformation, empowerment, skills development, and economic development and growth, we also have to be serious about looking after our assets including the youth ,
