Title: M Shilowa: Vodacom Challenge announcement

STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER OF GAUTENG, M SHILOWA, ON THE VODACOM CHALLENGE ANNOUNCEMENT, 21 June 2004

On behalf of the people of Gauteng, we welcome the announcement that this year's Vodacom Challenge will take place in our province and thank Vodacom and the two host teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, for having placed their trust in us.

It is well known that the people of Gauteng are passionate about sport and particularly the beautiful game: football. We are confident that government and the people of Gauteng will make this the best Vodacom Challenge ever. We will not disappoint you.

The Gauteng Provincial Government is supporting this Vodacom Challenge together with the City of Johannesburg and Gauteng Tourism Authority.

Our support for this challenge is evidence of our broader campaign to make Gauteng a home of competitive sport.

We been working closely with sports administrators and federations in Gauteng to ensure that all sporting codes get the necessary assistance to help them develop and make Gauteng the home of champions.

We will also make it worthwhile for Gauteng-based professional teams to play their games in their home province. We have committed ourselves to see to it that stadiums are in good working condition and have functioning floodlights for night games and improve the transport system to make it convenient for the fans to attend games.

Our support for sport, especially football is informed by its potential to contribute to economic growth, job creation and nation building. Apart from the players and team administrators who earn a living from the games, there are very many entrepreneurs, both big and small, who benefit from the income generating opportunities that are created every time a big match is staged.

Making Gauteng a home for competitive sports also means that we have to pay more attention to the development of young sports people. Through our sports development programme we will identify talented young people and help them to develop to their full potential where they can compete with the best in the world.

Our success in this programme will be indicated by the number of Gauteng players who represent the country at the highest competitive levels of their game.
