Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale has called on members of the public to nominate candidates to serve on the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) council.

The mandate of the council included the regulation of the social housing sector; accreditation of social housing institutions; advising the Minister on matters pertaining to social housing; and the administration of capital and institutional grants.

The council would also conduct compliance monitoring through inspections and to intervene in the day-to-day management of social housing institutions in cases where regular inspections have identified maladministration.

Council members would also assist the SHRA to deliver on its legislated mandate subject to the provisions of the Social Housing Act, which includes promoting the development and awareness of social housing and promoting an enabling environment for the growth of development of the social housing sector.

The Department of Human Settlements said in a statement on Friday that appointed council members would hold office for a period not exceeding three years, and could be eligible for re-appointment but could not serve for more than two terms consecutively.

Nominated candidates should have expertise and substantial experience in the field of social housing, risk management, financial management and policy development.
