An application for ex top cop Jackie Selebi's acquittal on corruption charges was dismissed in the High Court in Johannesburg on Monday.

Judge Meyer Joffe made the pronouncement after Selebi's counsel Jaap Cilliers said that he was entitled to an acquittal as the State had failed to prove his guilt.

"I have carefully considered heads of argument by the defence and state... Application for discharge is refused," said Joffe.

In regard to arguments that the former police chief did not have a fair trial, Joffe said such an argument constituted a separate application.

"I hold that such an application should not be determined at this stage. If advanced, it will be determined at the end of the trial," he said.
