Title: Selao: Patient transport accident
Statement by MEC for Health, MS S Selao, on patient transport accident
29 March 2005
Last night at approximately 19:00 one of our patient transport vehicles travelling from Springbok to Kimberley overturned due to what appeared as a tyre burst just about 30 - 40km from Kimberley.
The driver, Ms C Cloete unfortunately sustained serious chest injury and passed away at the scene. Seven other patients sustained injuries from serious to minor. All these patients were admitted at Kimberley Hospital last night. A forensic investigation will now be conducted.
Two patients were discharged this morning and others are serious but stable.
We will do everything in our power to ensure that such incidences do not reoccur. One of the strategies to be implemented will be to drive patients from Springbok to Upington and a fresh team to take over from Upington to Kimberley.
In the long term we will investigate a possibility of flying some of the cold cases from Springbok and Calvinia to Kimberley.
The process for training our drivers on dangerous driving is underway. In the next six months we would have trained all our drivers.
We would like to express our condolences to the affected bereaved families.
