SA-Iran set up working groups to strengthen ties

South African Minister of Foreign Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and her Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharrazi wrapped up discussions in Pretoria yesterday, after setting up structures aimed at boosting economic cooperation.

During the visit, Kamal Kharrazi met and held discussions with the Minister of Trade and Industry Alec Erwin and addressed the South African Institute for International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg.

Iranian Deputy Minister of Health, M Ahmadiyni held discussions with Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, while the Iranian Deputy Minister of Justice M Vahedi, held discussions with the Minister of Justice of the Penuel Maduna.

The main purpose of Kharrazi’s visit of was to co-chair the 7th Session of the Joint Commission between South Africa and Iran with Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

The two Foreign Ministers expressed their satisfaction with the existing state of relations between the two countries, especially in the areas of trade and investment and the increased interaction between Iran and the African continent over the last year.

The two sides decided to establish two working groups in the following fields, including a political and social working group and an economic and technical working group.

Deputy Director-General in the Department of Foreign Affairs Anil Sooklal and Director-General for Africa in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran Mohammed Ali Ghanezadeh, co-chaired the political and social working group, while Mousavi Mirkalaee, Director-General of African and Arab Countries of the Ministry of Commerce of Iran and Claude Byneveldt, Acting Director for North Africa and the Middle East, in the Department of Trade and Industry of South Africa co-chaired the economic and technical working group.

Further discussions also explored co-operation in the commercial, customs, banking, tourism, health, industry, mining, oil and petrochemicals, agriculture as well as judicial sector and social and women's affairs as well as co-operation in the fight against the trafficking of illicit drugs.
