The aim of the conference is to share and debate the findings of papers commissioned by the SAHRC for its Human Rights Review Project.
"As we start the second decade of democracy, it is important that we celebrate the considerable achievement of the past ten years in human rights but we must be robust and critical to assess the challenge of the next ten years," spokesperson Phumla Mthala said.
She said to this end, the SAHRC had commissioned a study to review human rights developments in the country during the first decade of democratic governance.
The study would review the historical context of human rights in the country; explore the extent that has been realised in the period of 1994-2004.
It would also provide critical analysis of programs, policies and approaches in addressing the rights and recommend the strategies for realising these dreams.
Mthala said however, the review would be careful to ground its assessment in South Africa's historical context.
"The review will also reflect on how human rights could best be promoted and protected in the second decade of the democracy," Mthala said. - BuaNews
