Sadtu appreciates and welcomes the announcement made by the MEC during his 2018/2019 Education Budget Speech that the stipend increase for Grade R Practitioners will take into consideration qualifications of these workers.

It has always been our call that those that have teaching qualification must have their qualification recognized. But secondly a more than 5 years’ record of R500 has been broken since the increase now will be R750 for those who do not possess a teaching (Bed) qualification and R1250 for those in possession of Bed.

Sadtu welcomes and appreciates this and regard it as a Victory for the Union Sadtu that has made the demand when we started negotiations with the HOD last year.

Having said all, this progressive announcement does not in any way displace Sadtu’s demand for the payment of the 2017 stipend increase owed to Grade R Practitioners which is R9000 for some and R15 000 for others depending on their qualification status. We will intensify our fight for this money.

Sadtu is still analysing the budget speech made by the MEC and will be formulating and making public our views on it as to whether it is really meant to improve and accelerate education delivery in the province.
