South African Democratic Students Movement (SADESMO) Secretary-General, Thabiso Dlamini, today said; “While SADESMO is totally disappointed by the appointment of Mduduzi Manana as the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training we are certainly not surprised. All this appointment does is confirm, yet again, that education is the lowest priority for the current South African Government.”
“We draw cold comfort from the fact that the role of a Deputy Minister is to assist Ministers in their responsibilities, which means that they get functions delegated to them by their Ministers. Secondly, they share the
role of overseeing the Department and its SOEs, as stated by the Deputy Minister of Communications, Stella Ndabeni,” said Dlamini.
“SADESMO believes that Manana lacks the experience required for the gruelling task of transforming the higher education sector, which we view is vital if we want to make education and training a top priority in South Africa,” concluded Dlamini.
