A Southern African Development Community-appointed (SADC-appointed) committee has been established to oversee the implementation of constitutional and security sector reforms in Lesotho, a report said on Wednesday, adding that the move would ensure stability in the mountain kingdom.

The eight-member panel, according to The Herald, was represented by Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Swaziland and Tanzania.

Lesotho's prime minister, Phakalitha Mosisili committed to a number of reforms, including constitutionalism, during a four-hour deliberation at the SADC summit in Gaborone, Botswana.

The SADC pledged to visit Lesotho periodically, provide expertise in key reform areas and to report on the country's progress in implementing these ideals to the Summit of Heads of State in Swaziland this coming August.

South Africa's Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa who acted as the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation and the facilitator, was to oversee the return of Lesotho opposition leaders.

"It was a very successful summit, held in a very cordial atmosphere. There was co-operation from all the parties involved, and it clearly indicated that we should get a good report at the SADC summit to be held in Swaziland in August. We are expecting a very positive progress report," Zimbabwean Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwe was quoted as saying.

The summit was convened to follow up on previous recommendations made by the commission tasked with the political instability in Lesotho since 2014. Violence erupted in Lesotho at the time, shortly after the then president Tom Thabane made strong allegations that there were attempts to overthrow his government, leading to chaos in the country. This resulted in politicians and members of the defence force fleeing the country.
