SACCI notes with grave concern the incidents of intimidation and violence that are accompanying the current transport workers strike. A number of SACCI members have confirmed that unrest, intimidation and violence has taken place nationwide. These incidents impinge on the constitutional rights of society to a safe environment. SACCI calls on the police to ensure that these constitutional rights are protected by taking appropriate action against the perpetrators.

SACCI also notes that the employers have revised their offer from 7,5% to 9%, but that labour is intransigent and refuses to budge from its 10% demand. The essence of consultation is that there should be give and take by both parties and that consensus is found about halfway between the demand and the offer. SACCI believes that the employers have made a sincere effort to resolve the issue and is extremely disappointed that labour apparently refuses to make any concessions.

SACCI points out that the negative impact of the strike has a ripple effect that damages the South African economy at both domestic and international levels. This in turn will impact on the viability of business and on its ability to continue operations without having to take action to counter the negative spin-offs. SACCI therefore calls on the parties to put South Africa First and to reach an accommodation that will not only benefit one group in the short term, but will ensure greater benefit for all in the longer term.
