Traditionally the business sector has opposed nationalisation. Currently, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry believes that the public calls for nationalisation do not serve a constructive purpose. While these calls for nationalisation appear to stand in contrast to the spirit and letter of the South African Constitution, business recognises the societal inequalities and the challenges of poverty and unemployment that our country faces.
The New Growth Path, as well as the Diagnostic Review by the National Planning Commission highlight the need for among others a strong private sector and increased effectiveness in delivery by government, more efficient transport and logistical systems and increased skills development. If achieved, this will lower the cost of doing business thus providing the platform needed for the productivity gains that will enable job creation and sustainable growth, objectives shared by all South Africans.

Accordingly, SACCI calls for a thorough discussion on the issue of nationalisation. While acknowledging the challenges the South African economy faces, SACCI caution against a rush towards perceived solutions. Unintended consequences can be devastating to the objectives in the New Growth Path and a short term solution for a long term problem will only aggravate the current challenges faced by South Africa. For this reason SACCI will host an open debate on Nationalisation on 4 August at the IDC in Sandton. To attend please RSVP at info@sacci.org.za or 011 4463800 before the 1st of August 2011.
