The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) condemns in the strongest possible terms the unacceptable protest by transport workers across the country. Their action is nothing short of economic sabotage that adversely impacts on the activities of all South Africans. SACCI calls upon the security authorities to protect the country against such acts of intimidation and to prosecute the perpetrators of such behaviour to the full extent of the law. If there is an attempt to spread anarchy and confusion in the country, then the authorities must act decisively.

SACCI also calls on labour unions to enforce discipline on their striking members, as is required by law, and reminds unions that a legal industrial action does not excuse the destruction of property or intimidation of other workers. South Africa is a democracy where the right to protest must be exercised with due care and respect to the rights of other participants in the economy and members of society.

SACCI will host discussions between senior government officials and business and labour leaders on the South African labour market at the SACCI Annual Convention on the 4th and 5th of October 2012 (visit sacci.org.za for further details).
