The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) is disturbed by the loss of life and ongoing violence at the Lonmin mine. SACCI is calling on the leadership in the labour unions to peaceful talks in order to prevent any further loss of life and injuries. The tragic events of the past week cast a negative light over South Africa and the willingness of stakeholders to enter robust debate.
Industrial action in South Africa is becoming synonymous with violence and intimidation. A recent court ruling against the use of violence during a strike and that a labour union must be held responsible for the action of its members supports this view. It is important that all social partners respect the letter and spirit of the law. Although the number of days lost decreased in 2011 according to a Department of Labour report, the number of work stoppages remained virtually unchanged.
The rights and obligations of workers during industrial action is an important element of South Africa’s regulatory regime and have far-reaching consequences on the long term economic growth of the country. SACCI will be discussing labour market policy, labour conduct and job creation at our Annual Convention on the 4th and 5th of October 2012 (see www.sacci.org.za/convention for details).
