The Road Map is a blueprint developed by the US, the United Nations, Russia and the European Union, aiming to settle the conflict through parallel steps, culminating in the establishment of two sovereign states.
Foreign Affairs Department's spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said government viewed the adoption of the resolution as a very important milestone on the way to the establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian state alongside that of Israel.
He said government welcomed in particular the efforts of Russia in placing the matter of formal adoption of the Road Map before the Security Council.
“The South African Government views the adoption of Resolution 1515 as a very important milestone on the way to the establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel,” he said.
He added that government reiterated its call on the Israelis and Palestinians to recommit themselves to the full implementation of the Road Map.
“South Africa will continue to support all efforts aimed at the creation of peace in the Middle East as for example demonstrated through the Geneva Accord and the Ayalon - Nusseibeh initiatives, amongst others”. -BuaNews.
