SA Tourism Chairperson Rick Menell said yesterday it was with regret that the organisation had accepted her decision and her departure would be a loss to the organisation.
Menell said Carolus had made a tremendous contribution during the rebuilding phase at South African Tourism.
"I have no doubt that we can find a leader to succeed her who will make an equally strong contribution during the next phase of the organisation's growth," he said.
The organisation will be advertising the position for the new incumbent to ensure a seamless leadership handover but "in the interim it is most definitely business as usual", he said.
Carolus took up a three-year term as CEO in November 2001, prior to which she was South African High Commissioner to London, a post she assumed in March1998.
Commenting on her departure, Carolus said she had never made any secret that she was a 'frontiers' person.
"South African Tourism is now in a very good space and I feel I have achieved what I set out to do, so it is time to move on.
"I have no current plans except to take some time out and then see what 2005 brings," she said. – BuaNews.
