Training in the system has also been enabled.
Driving the initiative is the South African Department of Provincial and Local Government and the Swedish Rescue Services Agency (SRSA) of the Kingdom of Sweden.
The programme was conceived between Saab Sweden and Grintek South Africa, through its subsidiary Grintek Integrated Defence Solutions (GrIDS).
The letter of intent signed in Pretoria identified the key areas for future co-operation.
These are information systems technology, and education, training and consulting in the field of disaster management.
The software offered by the SRSA, at no cost to South Africa, is the current version of LUPP (command and monitoring of disaster management and rescue operations) and RISKERA (disaster management module).
These tools will be delivered as plug-ins on Saab Civil Security Architecture in the Wearable Command Unit (WCU), provided by Saab Systems.
The software will be for exclusive use in government departments and agencies on a non-profit basis.
Planning is already underway for the launching of the first pilot Disaster Management project in the Eastern Cape.
The pilot project forms part of the Department of Provincial and Local Government's quest to establish a uniform National Disaster Management System.
Three municipalities have been selected for the first phase of the pilot project; Amatole District Municipality, including Buffalo City, Chris Hani District Municipality and Alfred Nzo District Municipality.
