The quake, which struck 10 km below the surface of Lake Tanganyika between Congo and Tanzania, toppled homes and left scores of people dead.
The effects of the earthquake could be felt in other of parts of East Africa such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
Reports said in the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha, the quake forced the evacuation of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda that is trying suspects for the 1994 genocide.
“Please Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa accept the deepest condolences of the South African government and people following the massive earthquake on Monday in which many are reported dead and injured as well as destruction to property and infrastructure.
“The thoughts and prayers of the government and people of South Africa reach out to the government and people of Tanzania and in particular bereaved families, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery,” he said. - BuaNews
