The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is currently embarking on a process to biometrically register social grants beneficiaries with the aim of rooting out fraud and corruption within the system. In order to complete this process all recipients of social grants are therefore expected to report to one of the registration sites within the next six months. In doing so however, the Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini, urges all parents and primary care givers in receipt of child support grants and foster child grants to ensure that their children do not absent themselves from school for re-registration purposes.
In order to cater for learners SASSA has made it possible for all registration sites throughout the country to continue to function well after school hours. Through local radio advertisements, distribution of pamphlets and posters, communities will be constantly informed of the various sites and actual dates and times on which they can present themselves for the re-registration process.
Ms Dlamini earlier pointed out that “parents of learners who receive child grants should not panic as their grants will not be stopped.”
