The South African Government is gratified at the safe release of the South African couple held captive by pirates since October 2010. In this regard, the South African Government wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia following the release on Wednesday, 20 June 2012, of the couple. The two have been in captivity in Somalia since 25 October 2010. The South African government also wishes to express its gratitude to the Government of the Italian Republic for their role in securing the release of the couple.
The couple was released unharmed and is receiving consular support from the South African mission to Somalia, which is based in Nairobi, Kenya. Arrangements are being made for the return of the couple to South Africa.
South Africa’s Ambassador designate to Somalia, Mr Ndumiso Ntshinga, is in contact with the couple and the authorities in Somalia and has verified that the couple is in good health and eager to be re-united with their loved ones. South Africa reiterates its profound gratitude to all parties that played a role in securing the release of the couple.
