Following the closure of inland and coastal schools this Friday on the 07 December 2012, The Road Traffic Management Corporation is issuing an alert to all road users on heavy traffic volumes expected along major arterial routes this weekend.

Among the corridors expected to carry heavier than usual traffic volumes are:

·         N3 south:                    Johannesburg to Durban

·         N1 north:                     Pretoria to Polokwane and onwards to Beitbridge

·         N4 east:                       Pretoria – Nelspruit – Komatipoort

·         N4 west:                      Pretoria – Rustenburg – Mahekeng

·         N1 south:                     Johannesburg – Bloemfontein (Mangaung) – Cape Town

·         N2 north:                     Durban – Stanger

·         N2 north:                     Mthatha – Kokstad

·         N2 east:                       Cape Town – Garden Route

·         N2 south:                     Mthatha  - East London

·         K573:                           Kwamhlanga –  Siyabuswa (Moloto) Road

·         N6:                               Bloemfontein – Aliwal North

Motorists are urged to obey all road traffic rules and regulations, to exercise patience at traffic operations and construction sites and to be prepared and polite at all times. National, provincial and municipal traffic authorities around the country will be on high alert for especially dangerous driving (which includes speeds too high for circumstances, following distances, dangerous overtaking and red light infringements); drunken driving and vehicle defects and overloading.

“No mercy will be shown to drivers who drive recklessly and/or negligently or whilst drunk. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we need to share the public space in harmony”, said Acting CEO of the RTMC, Collins Letsoalo.

“We appeal to the youth to mobilize the various social media platforms in order to raise the issues of road safety to make it top-of-mind awareness priority this festive season. We cannot continue to accept as normal, crashes that claim the lives of innocent youngsters who are in the prime of their lives.

Motorists are urged to buckle up at all times and to drive with their headlamps on during the day. A special appeal is made to drivers to look out for pedestrians especially near settlements and in urban areas. Pedestrians in turn, are requested to not jaywalk, drink and walk and must wear clothes that make them visible at night.
