President Jacob Zuma has today, 10 May 2011, and in terms of Section 6(1) of the Electoral Commission Act of 1996 (Act no. 51 of 1996) appointed Judge Gidfonia Mlindelwa Makhanya as a member of the Electoral Commission as recommended by the National Assembly.
In terms of the Act, the Electoral Commission must consist of five members, one of whom shall be a judge, appointed by the President. The position became vacant as a result of the passing away of Judge Herbert Qedusizi Msimang in April.
Judge Makhanya has a long and distinguished history with the law and the South African courts, having served as Acting Judge of South Gauteng High Court in 1999, Acting Judge of the Venda High Court and as a Judge of the former Transvaal Provincial Division (now South and North Gauteng High Courts).
“I am confident that Judge Makhanya will serve this important institution of our democracy with diligence and dedication that we have come to associate with him. We wish him all the success,” said President Zuma.
