SA: Statement by the Presidency, on President Zuma's meeting with religious leaders (28/11/2012)

President Jacob Zuma on the 28 November 2012, met with the leaders of the National Religious Leaders Council (NRLC) at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The NRLC was led by its Co-chairman, Reverend Ray McCauley.  
 
The primary aim of the meeting was to introduce the new organisation to the President after the National Interfaith Council of South Africa was dissolved.
 
The meeting also discussed the following:
 

·        The continuation of the partnership between government and the religious in the fight against poverty and general social upliftment.
·        The importance of the implementation of the Bill of Responsibilities, especially the promotion of the teachers’ training manual, which has been included in the national curriculum of schools.
·        The calling of a national summit to discuss ways of working together towards a unity of purpose in dealing with the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
·        The current state of the quality of education.
The President urged the religious leaders to lead in societal education about rights and responsibilities to ensure tolerance between the various sectors of our society.
 
The meeting agreed on holding regular meetings moving forward.
