President Jacob Zuma will on Friday, 8 June, visit Eskom's Medupi power station project in Lephalale in Limpopo province to witness the boiler pressure test of the first unit of Medupi.

If the boiler passes the pressure test, it should be just over a year until the first unit starts to generate electricity for the country's national grid.

Medupi will be the world's fourth largest coal-fired power station and once all its six units are completed, it will be able generate enough electricity to power almost the whole of Gauteng. The project has doubled the size of the economy at Lephalale and has brought jobs, skills and development to the local community, and to our economy as a whole.

Medupi is due to deliver first power to the grid at the end of 2013.

The Hydrostatic Pressure Test which will be conducted on Friday, is the most common statutory requirement in which newly manufactured equipments and pressure vessels such as pipelines and boilers are tested to ensure the integrity and maintain safety standards. The hydrostatic pressure test is conducted in the presence of the client and an independent inspection authority.
