The North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, has in its quest of ensuring uninterrupted delivery of services and fulfilling its mandatory role of coordinating and forging inter-governmental relations between government, state owned entities and the private sector, brought government’s Outcome 9 which promotes responsive, accountable, effective and efficient local government systems to the fore when 180 Water Process Controllers represented by officials in all municipalities were recently awarded with national certificates on Water and Wastewater Treatment Process Operations (NQF 2) in Mahikeng.

From these graduates, 67 were trained at NQF Level 2, and 66 on NQF skills and 47 were given recognition for prior learning (RPLed). Training which was conducted through Aurecon Training Academy.

“The provision of clean drinking water is an essential part of government’s agenda to rendering quality services to communities.I therefore wish to take this opportunity to congratulate all graduates, and wish to encourage them to carry forth the knowledge acquired in ensuring that we enforce and practice these standards to enable us to become municipalities of choice.

These graduates will now be able to thoroughly monitor the water cycle “from the source to the tap and vice versa” to evaluate how best water can be preserved and ensure that municipalities are able to provide communities with clean drinking and consumable water.”, said MEC Dodovu.

South Africa is currently the 30th driest country in the world and its water sources are currently running low due the inability by municipalities to implement water conservation systems of which through this learnership, graduates are trained to be able to improve and implement.

This initiative was a partnership between the Department of Water Affairs (DWA), Local Government Sector Education and Training (LGSETA), and various municipalities in the province and was supported by the North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, the North West Department of Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison, Botshelo Water, Magalies Water and Sedibeng Water.
