The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries would like to comment on today’s march to the National Legislature by the members of the communities that belong to the Nuweberg Residents’ Association.
The department would like to place on record that the Nuweberg village and office complex were handed over to the Cape Provincial Administration: Chief Directorate of Nature Conservation in 1987/88 by the then Department of Environmental Affairs and Forestry, as part of the State’s process of separating the conservation function from the commercial forestry function. The intention was for them to use the complex and village for their official purposes. The Cape Provincial Administration conservation and their successor, the Cape Nature Conservation Board (Cape Nature) have been in charge of this complex.
To the best of our knowledge, Cape Nature is still responsible for the delivery of services and for the maintenance of the village, including that of the residential and management buildings.
We received the memorandum because we are concerned about the needs of the communities involved and also request that the relevant people take responsibility for the needs of these communities.
