On Monday 12th November 2012, striking miners gathered close to the Amandelbult mine in Limpopo were fired on by Anglo security guards. It is our belief that they used rubber bullets and bird shot. Four people have been injured, One critically. He has been taken to hospital in Rustenburg.
It is estimated that twenty two people have been arrested; we are not sure where they are being held.
The striking miners were gathered to discuss decisions made at the Amplats strikers rally in Rustenburg that was attended by around 12,000 striking miners.
The Marikana Support Campaign notes with concern the increasing level of police and mine security violence aimed at striking miners who are attempting to hold democratic meetings to discuss the strike.
These attacks take place only four days after last Thursday’s shootings of workers en route to a mass meeting at Union mine by the North West police, who opened fire with rubber bullets injuring 14 workers who were taken to Platinum Health mine hospital to have their injuries seen to.
There will be a rally at the weekend at either Amandelbult or Northam mine to discuss the police violence. The details have not been confirmed, but will follow.
