The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) is elated about the settlement reached last night in the road freight wage dispute in the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI). The Federation welcomes the fact that the parties could reach agreement and bring and end to this sometimes violent strike.
“We are elated about the fact that the parties have at last settled,” said FEDUSA General Secretary Dennis George. “While we are mindful of the cost to the economy and the lives lost in this strike, we are convinced that the sector will now rebuild itself to the advantage of the greater South African economy,” he added.
FEDUSA affiliated trade unions organising in the road freight transport sector, the Motor Transport Workers Union (MTWU) and Professional Transport and Allied Workers Union (PTAWU) and the NACTU-affiliated Transport and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (TAWUSA) on Wednesday met with FEDUSA General Secretary Dennis George in Killarney in an attempt to facilitate movement in the deadlock. This resulted in a freshly mandated demand given to employers.
“We believe that this intervention was a great contributor to the final settlement,” said George. “The fact that FEDUSA and NACTU could stand together and make progressive proposals definitely facilitated the deal and added a positive spirit to the talks.”
While the FEDUSA and NACTU call for a two-year agreement (rather than one for three years) was not successful, most of the other aspects of the new demand were included in the agreement.
“We will now appeal to the Minister of Labour to extend the agreement to non-parties in the road freight and logistics sector in order to strengthen collective bargaining and foster respect for institutions and our collective bargaining system,” concluded George.
