The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will hold a two-month long series of workshops with stakeholders from tomorrow on the revised Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practice which were unveiled by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies in Midrand last week.

According to the Director-General of the dti, Mr Lionel October, the sessions are aimed at engaging all stakeholders on issues that they may need clarity on in order to enable them to give concrete feedback on the Codes.

“The Codes have been gazetted for public comment on Friday last week and this signalled the commencement of a sixty-day period during which all stakeholders and members of the public will give their inputs on the Codes. Despite this being a legislative requirement before the new Codes are finalised, the dti takes the views of stakeholders very seriously as the revised Codes will impact on how business is conducted in order to advance black economic empowerment. It is vital for the department to provide guidance and direction to key stakeholders on the changes and implications of the revised Codes as well as the B-BBEE Amendment Bill,” said October.

The first workshop will take place at the Hatfield Manor in Pretoria tomorrow. Government officials from various national departments will attend the workshop in order to familiarise themselves with the proposed Codes. This will be followed by workshops for verification agencies, State Owned Entities, Sector Charter Councils, provincial and local government officials, private sector chambers and foreign embassies over a period of two months.
