Minister for Social Development Bathabile Dlamini welcomes the findings of a study conducted by the University of Johannesburg on the impact of child support grants (CSG).

The study found that the CSG had positive impact on the lives of poor families and eased the burden of many unemployed women, especially single mothers. “Even though the study was conducted in Doornkop, its results are a reflection of the positive effects of social grants on the poor throughout the country,” says Minister Dlamini.

Minister Dlamini further says: “The Department of Social Development will next month release an extensive study which investigated the relationship between social grants and the implications of grants on the physical growth of boys and girls, their cognitive development as well as ability to solve mathematical problems. The study also looks at the propensity of teenagers in taking risks that result in pregnancy and the spread of HIV and AIDS, amongst others”.

The study was conducted by a large group of researches including those from the United States and United Kingdom who are renowned for assessing the impact of government programmes.
