In commemoration of the International Nelson Mandela day on 18 July 2014, Minister Thulas Nxesi led Public Works department’s efforts and contribution towards their 67 minutes for Mandela day by painting, cleaning and donating school uniform to needy learners at W.F Nkomo Secondary school in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. The school was formed in 1969 as the second High school in this township and it was named after Dr. William Frederick Nkomo, a well- known medical doctor and activist.

Due to Mandela’s selfless and humanitarian spirit, the United Nations has declared his birthday (18 July) as the International Nelson Mandela Day. The Minister was accompanied by the Department’s Deputy Director Generals and other employees who rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside educators, learners and community at the school to improve the schools conditions. A feasibility study of the school prompted the department to select W.F Nkomo secondary school as deserving beneficiary of school uniforms to needy students. Public Works employees opened their hearts and pockets in contributed in procuring uniforms for the learners.

Over the years the school has produced outstanding results and great personalities who went on to make great achievements in their lives and careers.

The school was initially established as a junior secondary school catering from standard six to standard eight (grades 8-10) until it 1979. IN 1980, it was upgraded into a senior secondary school.

The current number of learners is 1016 and educators is 34 respectively.

The school caters for the following areas Mshenguville, Brazzaville, Siyahlala, Atteridgeville West, Saulsville, Lotus gardens, Laudium (Itireleng informal settlements.
