A TOTAL of R234 million will be spent on bulk infrastructure in preparation for the 30 000 housing units to be built in the Limpopo town of Lephalale over the next ten years, Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale said today.
Sexwale was speaking at the sod-turning ceremony to kick-start the project that will see the development of a new town near the R300 billion Medupi Power Station.
"You won't see houses here now, the real progress of the project is underground where the bulk infrastructure work has begun with the value of R234 million," he said.
The project – which will be named after the late Minister of Housing Joe Slovo - will see houses being built over the next 10 years in co-operation with other government departments.
"We are going to see schools, hospitals, shops and many other amenities that people need to have an integrated human settlements. We always say where we live is where we pray, where we leisure and where we work."
Executive Mayor of Lephalale Jack Maeko, said he was happy that Department of Human Settlements was contributing to the creation of the first city under the democratic government.
"This city we are building, will also help people to realize economic transformation and freedom in their live time," said Maeko.
