Communications Minister Radhakrishna Roy Padayachie today held a meeting with Rural Development and Land Reform Deputy Minister Thulasizwe Nxesi, representatives of the offices of the Land Claims Commission both at national and regional levels (Durban), the management of Telkom and representatives of the Block AK community in Greyville, Durban.
The meeting follows complaints lodged with the Minister by the Block AK community in 2008. The community required the Minister’s intervention in finding a resolution to a property related dispute between them and Telkom.
Telkom had intended to auction a property located in the Block AK community. The property which belongs to Telkom, is currently a subject of a land claim. Members of the community requested the Minister to persuade Telkom to halt the auction process until the claim is finalised.
The Minister is pleased that all the parties present at today’s meeting have committed to working together in finding a permanent solution to this dispute.
“I’m encouraged by Telkom’s willingness to give time for the restitution process to settle the matter”.
The meeting agreed to establish a Working Committee consisting of the Department of Rural Development, Land Claims Commission and the Department of Communications.
The committee will be chaired by Deputy Minister Nxesi.
The meeting also agreed that Telkom will stay the process of auctioning the property pending the resolution of the Working Committee.
