The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC) mourns the passing of Zwelakhe Sisulu, and conveys its condolences to the Sisulu family as the nation loses another noble patriot.
Zwelakhe Sisulu was an activist, journalist and latterly a businessman. He led the way in journalism in the darkest days of apartheid. A fighter for justice and freedom, his determination and endeavour contributed towards ensuring that the truth about the injustices of apartheid was revealed for all to see.
As journalist, editor of the New Nation in the 1980s and CEO of the SABC in the 1990s he inspired a generation of journalists, and articulated and strengthened the role of the media in a democratic society.
CASAC Chairman, Sipho Pityana said:
“As the country faces increasingly challenges to its social cohesion and commitment to the constitutional order we need to call on all true patriots in the mould of Zwelakhe to help steer us towards the goals of the liberation struggle. The ‘Sisulu’ name is an embodiment of the commitment to selfless struggle so that the dignity of all South Africans can be respected and enhanced.”
