The Tshwane street name project which is aimed at ensuring that the historical injustices are corrected, that the dignity and heritage of all people of the City is restored and correctly reflected is on-going. It should be seen as a nation building exercise aimed at bringing social cohesion in Tshwane.

Part of the street renaming process is to submit possible names to the City’s name bank for future naming or renaming of streets. However, in order for the City to use these names, it usually requires permission from the families of the nominated persons.

On 26 June 2012, Council resolved that the following people’s names be approved in order to name/rename streets:

· Abraham Makolane

· Elliot Sathekge

· Jeremiah Magagula

· Jeremiah Zondi Ntuli

· Morris Kabini

· Rooibaard Geldenhuys

· Samuel Masilela

· Sipho Phillip Sibanyoni

· Stephen Makena

· Thomas Phiri

· Prof MW Makgoba

· Dr TT Mboweni

The city calls upon the families of these people to contact the Toponymy Offices in order to collect and complete the consent forms as the city is unable to continue with the process.

The street renaming process aims to change names of the streets that are offensive, or have colonial/apartheid legacy.
