The Chamber of Mines, representing AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields and Harmony, and the NUM, Solidarity and UASA, today met to discuss measures to bring normality to the gold mining industry and to bring to an end the unprotected industrial action that is taking place on some of the operations.
The parties have agreed in principle on the content of an agreement which they intend to sign on Thursday, 25 October 2012.
“It is most pleasing to note that large numbers of employees have returned to work and strikes on a number of operations have ended” said Dr Elize Strydom, Senior Executive: Employment Relations of the Chamber of Mines.
Dr Strydom said that “today’s discussions were positive and there is a collective resolve by all the parties to end the unprotected action as soon as possible. The gold mining industry is going through some turbulent times. We now have to put all our efforts into stabilising the gold mining sector and returning the industry to normality. This is in the best interests of the employees, the companies and the country as a whole”.
The parties are all committed to ensuring the safety of employees and protecting them from acts of violence and intimidation.
