The North West Province has trained 1 828 farmers in livestock, poultry and crop production over the past three years in an effort to improve employment opportunities in the farming sector and promote economic livehoods, North West Province Premier Thandi Modise announced on Monday.

Premier Modise said that the objective of the training intervention was to improve food production and reposition the province as the food basket of South Africa.

“Fresh produce markets that we have launched in Mahikeng and Taung are to be extended to Bojanala Platinum and Dr Kenneth Kaunda Districts in due course to improve access to affordable and diverse food. Primary Animal Health Care programmes that were extended to Morokweng village in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati are to be rolled out to other districts across the province as well.” said Modise.

The provincial department of agriculture and rural development has commissioned a team of scientists to review livestock improvement strategy to support agrarian reform.

Twenty multi-purpose livestock handling facilities that are to be used as animal pounds across the province have been constructed.
