Trade union Solidarity welcomed the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU’s) participation in today’s discussions on the future of the local mining industry. Solidarity and several other stakeholders in the industry also participated in today’s discussions with the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources.
Solidarity General Secretary Gideon du Plessis says this is Amcu’s first positive involvement in a debate of stakeholders in the mining industry. “It’s certainly a step in the right direction and constitutes a welcome contribution towards uniting organised labour in the industry,” Du Plessis said.
Du Plessis says Solidarity has called on Amcu to continue its positive engagement by continuously being part of the mainstream debate on issues that affect the local mining industry. “Amcu’s participation will certainly promote peaceful and stable labour relations that are essential for the sustainability of the South African mining industry,” Du Plessis says.
