Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police has lauded the South African Police Services (SAPS) for bringing down the crime rate in South Africa.
This follows today’s release of crime statistics by the Minister of Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa. According to the latest statistics, the murder rate has dropped by 3.1%. The Committee said the figures demonstrated that the hard work (in the fight against crime) by the police was paying off. The Committee also said that it was commendable that the SAPS was improving every year as this showed that government was getting value for its money.
The Committee, however, is concerned that sexual crime has not significantly dropped, as there was only 1.9% drop in the rape rate.
