Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs has congratulated the Department of Home Affairs for receiving an unqualified audit opinion for the financial year 2010/2011. This comes as numerous Departments are presenting their annual and financial reports before numerous parliamentary committees.
This is the first unqualified audit opinion that the Department has received since the advent of democracy. The Department has been receiving qualified audit opinions and disclaimers for the past four financial years. The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Maggie Maunye said this was a step closer to achieving a clean audit which showed that there was light at the end of the tunnel, as. “We recognise and appreciate the hard work and dedication by the Department to clean up its finances”, Ms Maunye said. The unqualified audit showed that the Department’s huge efforts to improve service delivery had been recognised, she said.
She said the unqualified audit raised the hope that all government departments could achieve clean audits by 2014. The Committee urged the Department to urgently resolve the remaining problem areas in order to move closer to a clean audit. “We want the department to sustain this momentum going forward,” said Committee Chairperson, Ms Maunye.
The Department said the clean audit could not have been achieved without the vigorous oversight function by the Committee.
